Barbara Ann Scott was born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland where she trained as a teacher. Art was always her first love and so she also attended evening classes at the Edinburgh College of Art and enrolled in art programs with the Open University UK. After immigrating to British Columbia, she obtained a Master's Degree in Art Education from the University of Victoria and continued to teach elementary students until her retirement. In retirement she continued to develop her own creativity by attending many workshops with renowned, international artist, e.g. Katherine Chang Liu. As an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, she has exhibited in many juried shows and received several awards for her work. Barbara is a mixed media, abstract artist who enjoys using metaphor and whimsy to illustrate concepts like communication strategies or birds-eye-view landscapes. Her work is in private collections in Canada, the USA and the UK.

Artist's Statement

My abstract art is very much a personal journey with inspiration from the world around me: the Architecture of rock formations, the diversity of plant forms, cityscapes, birds-eye views and the way shadow and light create mood and mystery

I enjoy building rich, layered paintings and collages using a variety of papers and mixed media. I work intuitively to express concepts, using personal mark-making symbolism and whimsy. My objective is to impart enough mystery for the viewer to explore, interpret and respond to an image in his/her own way.
